Greatest Sensible Thermostat 2022: Warmth Your Dwelling With Nest, Amazon And Extra (Overview)

Thermostats sound pretty boring at first, don’t they? Of course we need them, but can someone make them exciting or smart?

Actually yes. A smart thermostat has many advantages. You can often control it with your voice or via a smartphone app, which may save you going down a gear, for example, to turn up the heat while staying warm in bed.

Even better: if you drive home after a few days on the road, you can turn on the heating via your smartphone before you start your journey so that you don’t return to an ice-cold house. In our experience, warming up a cold house always takes longer than you think, so it is best to plan ahead.

Some smart thermostats work in tandem with other smart devices, meaning that when a smoke alarm detects smoke it can simultaneously turn off the boiler to prevent the fire from worsening. Others work with smart radiator units to more precisely regulate the temperature in each room.

Then there are those that work in conjunction with your smartphone so the system knows when everyone can leave the house and turn down the temperature – you won’t be going on vacation anymore and on the second day you will find that you left the heating on at full blast to have.

How we tested

We tested a number of smart thermostats for ease of setup and use, system flexibility, and functionality. They were our favorites.

The best smart thermostats for 2022 are:

  • Best overall – Nest Learning Thermostat: £ 219, Google.com
  • Best for multi-area control – Honeywell Evohome: £ 299, Amazon.co.uk
  • Best for simplicity – Tado Smart Thermostat: £ 199.99, Tado.com
  • Best for design – Hive Active Heater 2: £ 179, Hivehome.com
  • Ideally with a tight budget – Nest Thermostat E: £ 199, Google.com

Nest learning thermostat

Preferably: total

  • Dimensions: 84mm x 84mm x 30mm
  • Sensors: Temperature sensors, humidity sensor, proximity sensor

Nest set a new standard when it launched its first smart thermostat – this is the third generation model. It’s the most advanced thermostat out there and works well with other Nest products like the company’s smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and home security cameras. It’s very easy to set up and control as a schedule is set up in the Nest smartphone app. This is nifty: choose either to have the radiators start up at a certain time or to have them reach “real radiation”, i. The Nest Learning Thermostat can tell when you’re not home and turn the heating down or off accordingly. The learning part of the name refers to the fact that the thermostat clocks your use and adjusts accordingly, although you can override this at any time with the push of a button.

Honeywell evohome

Preferably: For control in several areas

  • Dimensions: 139mm x 100mm x 20mm
  • Sensors: Temperature sensors

This system comes with two wireless radiator controls, but is also available without. The advantage: radiators can be individually regulated so that you don’t have to go to separate rooms to get the heat exactly where you need it. Not only does this mean that you don’t heat unoccupied rooms, but if one likes a warm bedroom and the other likes a cooler one, both of you can be happy.

Smart Tado thermostat

Preferably: For the sake of simplicity

  • Dimensions: 104 mm x 104 mm x 20 mm
  • Sensors: Temperature sensors, humidity sensor, ambient light sensor

The Tado has the simplest design of them all, but it still looks great. Tado has always built in compatibility with Apple’s HomeKit system, which most systems don’t. This means that you can control the Tado with your voice, whether you have Google, Alexa or Siri as your virtual assistant. As with the Honeywell, you can add individual radiator thermostats to the mix for more precise control. However, it doesn’t have the nest learning feature so it won’t adjust the schedules you set, and setting those schedules required more input than some of its competitors.

Beehive active heating 2

Preferably: draft

  • Dimensions: 95.9 mm x 95.9 mm x 46.2 mm (including dial)
  • Sensors: Temperature sensors, humidity sensor, proximity sensor

The Hive thermostat is certainly attractive so you don’t have to worry about it being prominently placed. The Hive range includes other compatible items such as radiator valves, smart window and door sensors, smart lights, cameras, motion sensors and smart plugs, so you can easily expand your smart home beyond your heating when you’re ready. None of them look as smart as the thermostat, mind you. Like the nest, the hive can be set to puncture when leaving the house and adjust the heating accordingly. Hive is part of British Gas, although you don’t have to be a British Gas customer to get it. Note that in most cases you will need to add £ 70 for a professional install.

Nest thermostat E.

Preferably: With tighter budgets

  • Dimensions: 390 mm x 192 mm x 215 mm
  • Sensors: Temperature sensors, humidity sensor, proximity sensor

This is similar to the Nest Learning Thermostat above, although you’ll find that it is missing the middle word: there are no learning skills. It’s not that fancy either, because it’s made of plastic instead of glass and metal. But the rest of this thermostat is like its more expensive brother, including simply tapping the screen to get things done, or using a smartphone app. It’s simple and effective – although the more expensive it is, the more it is.
